Almost every Indian small business already uses WhatsApp. The question is whether the free WhatsApp Business app is still enough, or whether you need the WhatsApp Business Platform (the “API”). Many businesses move too early and pay for tools they do not use. Others stay too long and lose enquiries.
What the Business app gives you
The Business app is free and runs on a phone. It has a business profile, a product catalog, labels to sort chats, quick replies for common answers, and greeting and away messages. It can be linked to a few other devices, so a small team can share one number.
For a shop, a clinic, a tutor or a small studio, that is often all you need.
What the API adds
The API is not an app. It is a connection that software uses to send and receive WhatsApp messages. You normally reach it through a provider, such as WATI, AiSensy or Interakt. What it unlocks:
- Automation: chatbots and workflows that reply and act without a person.
- A team inbox: multiple agents on the same number with assignment and notes.
- Template broadcasts: approved messages to many people, at scale and with reporting.
- Integrations: orders, bookings and payments flowing in and out of your other tools.
What it costs you
Two kinds of cost, and the second one is the one people miss.
- Money: a provider’s plan fee, plus WhatsApp’s per-message charges for template messages. See WhatsApp message costs in India.
- Time: someone has to set up the flows, write the templates, keep the contact list clean, and watch the inbox. In a small business that someone is usually you.
How to tell if you have outgrown the app
Move when two or more of these are true:
- You regularly miss messages because several people share one phone.
- You send the same answer more than 20 times a week and it still takes a person.
- You need to message a large list on a schedule, such as fee reminders or renewals.
- You want enquiries to flow into a sheet or booking system without retyping.
- You have someone who can own the setup.
If only one is true, improve your Business app setup first: labels, quick replies, an away message. It costs nothing and gets you most of the way.
Where an agent fits
A platform gives you the pipes. Someone still has to decide what flows through them. An agent such as vv is designed for that layer: reading your sheet, writing the message, booking the slot and asking before anything risky. It is not on sale yet. If your problem is only sending and receiving messages, you do not need it.
