WhatsApp Business AI in India: how to turn it on, and its limits

Short answerBusiness AI is a free-to-try assistant inside the WhatsApp Business app that answers customers from what you teach it. Turn it on from Tools → Your Business AI, feed it your real prices, timings and policies, and keep watching its replies for the first two weeks. It is a good first reply. It is not yet a system that updates your records, chases payments or connects to your other software.

In May 2026 Meta announced Business AI on WhatsApp for small businesses in India (read 28 October 2026). It is the first time an AI reply assistant has been built into the app most Indian businesses already run on. That makes it worth understanding properly before you either ignore it or pay someone for something it already does.

What it does

According to Meta’s announcement, Business AI can:

  • Answer customer questions around the clock, using your business profile and catalogue.
  • Use extra information you add: FAQs, pricing, discounts, delivery or shipping details.
  • Recommend products and help close a sale.
  • Capture leads and book appointments.
  • Work in Indian languages, not only English.

You can step into any conversation, change how it behaves, or switch it off. Meta also said UPI payments inside the chat are coming but were not available at launch.

How to turn it on

  1. Update the WhatsApp Business app from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Open the Tools tab.
  3. Tap Your Business AI and follow the guided setup.

If the option is missing, the rollout has probably not reached your account. Meta said eligible businesses would get it over several weeks and did not publish the full eligibility criteria. There is nothing to buy to unlock it, so be wary of anyone selling “Business AI activation”.

What to feed it first

The assistant is only as good as what it knows. Before you switch it on for customers, write down:

  • Your ten most-asked questions and the exact answers you want given. Our 20-minute WhatsApp inbox audit finds them.
  • Current prices and what is included, and what is not.
  • Timings, location and holidays.
  • Booking rules: slots, advance needed, cancellation.
  • What it must never answer: refunds, medical or legal advice, complaints, anything involving a discount you have not approved. Tell it to hand those to a person.

Then test it like a customer would, in Hindi, English and Hinglish, with spelling mistakes and half-sentences. Fix every wrong answer by changing what it knows, not by hoping.

Where it falls short

Business AI answers inside a chat. Most of the work that costs a small business money happens around the chat:

  • It does not update your records in Tally, a Google Sheet or your booking software.
  • It does not send reminders from a list. Fee reminders, appointment reminders and payment follow-ups to many people still need the WhatsApp Business API through a platform. See app vs API.
  • It does not chase. If the customer goes quiet after a price, nothing follows up.
  • It does not report to you. There is no morning summary of who enquired, who booked and who still owes money.
  • It cannot be shared across a team the way an API inbox can.

Risks to manage

  • Wrong prices or promises. If an old price sits in your catalogue, the AI will quote it. Clean the catalogue first.
  • Sensitive conversations. Clinics, schools and finance businesses should keep health, child and money details with a person.
  • Tone. Read twenty of its replies a day for the first two weeks. Customers forgive a slow human more easily than a confident wrong answer.

When it is enough, and when it is not

It is probably enough if most of your WhatsApp volume is the same questions, you reply from one phone, and bookings are simple.

You need more if you send reminders or updates to lists, several people share the number, enquiries must land in a sheet or CRM, or the real problem is follow-through rather than first replies. That is level 3 or 4 in our WhatsApp automation guide.

If you are not sure which side you are on, send us your top ten questions and how enquiries flow today. We will tell you whether Business AI covers it, for free. If it does not, our WhatsApp automation service sets up the next level.
